Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is looking to revitalize its health care system to confront high HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis prevalence rates and improve health service delivery. Zimbabwe faces difficult human resource retention challenges, along with the need to increase health care financing and the efficiency of pharmaceutical management and health information reporting.

The Zimbabwean Ministry of Health and Child Welfare (MOHCW), together with Health Systems 20/20, has completed a comprehensive data collection and assessment of the Zimbabwean health system. The health system assessment will assist the MOHCW, health partners and stakeholders, and donor agencies identify gaps in health care provision and develop recommendations to improve the health care system.

The assessment was carried out via formal interviews and policy discussions with MOHCW officials, donor agencies, and key health stakeholders (Zimbabwean and international); and utilized a data collection team to gather information on health care services and performance from regional and district health offices, and from private and public health care facilities.

A final assessment report will be presented to the MOHCW, USAID, and other donor agencies and health partners in Harare in spring, 2010.
